A rare case in which cartilage cells were observed in cerebrospinal fluid is reported and the
literature reviewed. This phenomenon, occurring in 0.2% of the cerebrospinal fluid
specimens, is thought to be caused by accidental puncture of the intervertebral disk. It has
the potential of being mistaken for a malignant process.
